Caley clean cosmetics

Caley Cosmetics is a company I recently stumbled upon on the internet and wanted to try some of their products. Caley is a women owned family company based out of California that started in 2019. Their website states, “No harmful chemicals, synthetic colors, or fragrances. Just good-for-you ingredients. Look gorgeous & enjoy the process” (caley). They also make everything locally to guarantee quality, maintain sustainability, and ensure ethical sourcing, and responsible manufacturing. They are also a certified Leaping Bunny company so no animal testing. Leaping Bunny Certification means that they have met a requirement “that no new animal testing be used in any phase of product development by the company, its laboratories, or ingredient suppliers (leaping bunny)”.

They have a relatively small product line which consists of a self tanning foam, face moisturizer, a sort-of do-it-all cleansing balm, a bronzer/ highlighter balm, a lipstick, a lip oil, and a liquid lip product. Plus they have three different types of pencils (lip, eye, and brow). Their products all have a fresh island vibe loaded with fruit extracts and probiotics. I think watermelon extract is in everything. And their skincare products contain bakuchiol.

I chose four products to start plus got a free gift…

You can register on their website to get coupon codes. I believe that I got 10% off my first order. There always seems to be some kind of sale to get discount products available on their website. You can also buy some of their lip and eye products on Amazon.

They also have an affiliate program that you can apply for to get additional discounts to promote items. Disclaimer – I have not applied to the affiliate program. This is an honest review and I get no commission off the links provided. I bought these products with my own money because I wanted to try them.

BEACH BABE NATURAL BROWS $14

From Company – Time to pencil in effortless brows, framing your face has never been so breezy. Perfect brows are only a sharpen away with this ultra-fine natural brow makeup. Create any shape you wish with this easy to use defining pencil that mimics the look of natural hair. Transform fussy or shapeless brows with tamed precision by filling in sparse hairs and outlining the size and shape with perfect symmetry. It’s available in 5 colors, one of which is auburn (that make me happy!)

First Impressions – I really love this pencil. It does go on super easy and it doesn’t smudge. And the color is great for me too. It is really hard to find auburn brow pencils.

Ingredients – Jojoba Seed Oil (wax from plant extract that is skin restoring/ replenishing), Castor Seed Oil (vegetable oil – thickening), Abyssinian Seed Oil (plant based oil rich in omega 3’s), Hydrogenated Castor Oil (mixture of synthetic and natural castor oil), Candelilla Wax (plant extract thickening agent), Elderberry Extract (antioxidant/ plant extract), Watermelon Seed Oil (antioxidant/ plant extract), Papaya Seed Oil (antioxidant with some natural exfoliating properties), Pineapple Fruit (antioxidant, exfoliate), Hibiscus Flower Extract (antioxidant/ skin restoring), Rosemary Leaf Extract (antioxidant, fragrance), Mango Extract (antioxidant, skin replenishing), Jasmine Oil (fragrance), [+/- Mica (77019) (Says it’s ethically sourced on website, mineral used as a shimmering agent), Titanium Dioxide (77891) (sunscreen, coloring agent), Iron Oxide (77491, 77492, 77499) (coloring agent from natural minerals), Tin Oxide (778161, 77499) (sunscreen, pigment coloring agent), Kaolin (clay mineral usually used for absorption).

Overall thoughts – Just for comparison sake, here are the first 5 ingredients in Covergirls Easy Breezy eyebrow pencil $9 – Diisostearyl Malate (emollient made from alcohol), Triethylhexanoin (synthetic mix of glyercin and fatty acids, emulsifier), C20-40 Acid (thickening agent), C20-40 Alcohols (made from plastic), Polyethylene (plastic).

So it is worth an extra $5 for something free of plastic and loaded with good for you skin ingredients? To me it is worth the extra $5!

Maltodextrin does many things in cosmetic products, including absorbent, binding agent, stabilizer, film-forming agent, and skin-softener), Lactobacillus Ferment (A lab-created, non-living probiotic ingredient made by fermentation of the microorganism Lactobacillus. Applied to skin, it’s been shown to have a potent soothing effect that in turn strengthens skin’s ability to defend itself from aggressors), Stevia Extract (plant extract).

Overall Thoughts – It’s a great lip moisturizer. It doesn’t give a lot of color on my lips. More of a nude shade or gloss.

BEACH BABE GLOW in golden glow $24

From Company – You know that mid-summer feeling where you hardly wear makeup because your face feels so gloriously sun-kissed? Coming back from vacation or a trip to the beach and everyone’s jealous of your rosy glow and peachy-perfect cheeks. Sprinkle a little sparkle on top of the cheekbones and your confidence beams like the afternoon sun. That’s what you get with the Beach Babe Glow Sunkissed Duos. You’ll be glowing from the inside out.

First Impression – It goes on very moist. It’s not a dry powder but more of a moisturizing tinted balm. I have dry skin and usually would use a liquid blush or highlighter so I do really like the shimmer this product. It does tend to build up around the jaw line and I have to remove with damp cloth. It could a bit too heavy for someone with greasy or acne prone skin.

Ingredients – Coco-Caprylate/Caprate (light-weight emollient derived from coconut oil), Crambe Abyssinica (Abyssinian) Seed Oil (plant based oil rich in omega 3’s), Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil (antioxidant, emollient), Undecane (and) Tridecane, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch (talc alternatives), Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax (plant extract thickening agent), Hydrogenated Castor Oil (vegetable oil, thickening), Citrullus Lanatus (Watermelon) Seed Oil (antioxidant/ plant extract), Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) oil (plant extract, emollient), Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis Flower Extract (antioxidant/ skin restoring), Sambucus Nigra (Elderberry) Fruit Extract (antioxidant/ plant extract), Ananas Sativus (Pineapple) Fruit (antioxidant, exfoliate), Maltodextrin (plant-based sugar created by hydrolyzing a saccharide with starch from corn, potato, or rice. Maltodextrin does many things in cosmetic products, including absorbent, binding agent, stabilizer, film-forming agent, and skin-softener), Lactobacillus Ferment (lab-created, non-living probiotic ingredient made by fermentation of the microorganism Lactobacillus. Applied to skin, it’s been shown to have a potent soothing effect that in turn strengthens skin’s ability to defend itself from aggressors), Rosemarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract (antioxidant, fragrance), Mangifera Indica (Mango) Fruit Extract (antioxidant, skin replenishing) , Citrus sinensis peel oil expressed (fragrance), Carica Papaya (Papaya) Seed Oil (antioxidant with some natural exfoliating properties), Stevia Rebaudiana Extract (plant extract)  [+/- Mica (77019) (shimmering mineral) (ethically sourced), Iron Oxide (77491, 77492)(mineral sunscreen, coloring agent), Titanium Dioxide (77891)(mineral sunscreen/ coloring agent), Zinc Oxide (77497) (mineral sunscreen/ coloring agent), Kaolin (clay mineral usually used for absorption).

Final Impression – Great product with real clean ingredients compared to some other companies that say they are clean but really not different than drug store varieties.

TROPICAL MELT with probiotics and bakuchiol $30

From Company – A super powered multi-purpose balm with a silky finish and luxurious feel. Bursting with antioxidants and a unique combination of plant-based nutrients for intense hydration & skin rejuvenation.  Contains a unique combination of plant-based nutrients that deliver smooth, glowy results. Skin is left feeling soft & hydrated. Melt some Tropical Magic onto skin during your morning ritual or as part of your evening routine. The benefits are endless with this do-it-all skin repairing salve that will nourish & protect.

First Impressions – kind of reminds me of pouring a yogurt fruit smoothy on your face. It is not a balm. It is more liquid-y. I actually split some opening it because I thought it would be more solid. I am not sure why but it actually burns my face when it’s on and I have to wash it off. It does leave skin hydrated afterwards. I use a gel wash to remove the excess oil.

Ingredients – Crambe Abyssinica Seed Oil (plant based oil rich in omega 3’s) , Vitus Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil (plant extract, antioxidant, moisturizing) (doesn’t say whether it is cold pressed or chemically derived), Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil (antioxidant, emollient), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil (wax from plant extract that is skin restoring/ replenishing), Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil (plant extract, emollient), Citrullus Lanatus (Watermelon) Seed Oil (antioxidant/ plant extract), Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Oil (emollient and softening agent), Cera Alba (Beeswax)(thickening agent), Terminalia Ferdinandiana (Kakadu Plum) Fruit Extract (antioxidant), Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis Flower Extract (antioxidant/ skin restoring), Ananas Sativus (Pineapple) Fruit (antioxidant, exfoliate), Glyceryl Monocaprylate (emollient, skin softening), Glyceryl Monoundecylenate (emollient, skin softening), Lecithin (Phospholipid found in egg yolks and plants, skin preplenishing), Maltodextrin (plant-based sugar created by hydrolyzing a saccharide with starch from corn, potato, or rice. Maltodextrin does many things in cosmetic products, including absorbent, binding agent, stabilizer, film-forming agent, and skin-softener), Lactobacillus Ferment (lab-created, non-living probiotic ingredient made by fermentation of the microorganism Lactobacillus. Applied to skin, it’s been shown to have a potent soothing effect that in turn strengthens skin’s ability to defend itself from aggressors), Bakuchiol (anti-aging antioxidant), Rosemarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract (antioxidant, fragrance), Triethyl Citrate (Sugar Cane) (plant extract), Linalool (fragrance/ sensitizing), Citrus Aurant Dulcis (Orange) (fragrance/ sensitizing), Phenyl Ethyl Acetate (Jasmine) (fragrance), Methyl Butyl Acetate (Honey) (texture enhancer), Octolaton Gamma (Peach) (antioxidant/ skin restoring), Artemisia Pallens (Davana) (essential oil/ fragrance/ sensitizing), Citrus Sinensis Peel Oil expressed (fragrance/ sensitizing), Mica (77019) (shimmering mineral), Titanium Dioxide (sunscreen / coloring agent), Iron Oxide (77491) (sunscreen/ coloring agent), Silica (clay based thickening agent).

Overall Thoughts – the product has too many fragrance ingredients to be put on the face, it’s irritating to the skin and can damage your delicate skin barrier on your face. I really like the idea of using it as part of a double cleanse or facial treatment. If they removed the linalool, citrus peel, jasmine perfume, and essential oil then it would be great for the face.

ISLAND AMBROSIA with probiotics and bakuchiol $48 (free sample!)

This was my free gift. A sample of the Island Ambrosia Face cream. I was really excited to try it.

From Company – A natural Retinol & Hyaluronic Acid alternative without the risk or irritation. This gentle yet powerful plant-based cream helps to smooth the look of fine lines & wrinkles, plumps & protects. An innovative formula that’s the secret to a youthful glow. This lightweight, luxurious moisturizer balances rich anti-aging benefits with a delicate buttery finish. Elevate your self-care routine with its calming nourishment that will leave you feeling silky smooth. Your skin will love drinking up this intoxicating elixir.

First Impression – it is a pinkish color and has a tropical fruit smell to it. It did not make my face irritated when applying although did irritate my eyes a bit. It feels very moist on but, yet, still dries to a matte texture. From an aesthetic feel it’s wonderful. My skin feels hydrated and look good with it on but not overly greasy.

Ingredients – Aqua (water), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil (wax from plant extract that is skin restoring/ replenishing), Glycerin (vegatable fat, skin restoring/ replenishing), Cetearyl Olivate (fatty acids from olives, emulsifier), Sorbitan Olivate (fatty acids from olives, emulsifier), Citrullus Lanatus (Watermelon) Seed Oil (antioxidant/ plant extract), Hydrolyzed Viola Tricolor Extract (antioxidant, skin-soothing), Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil (antioxidant, emollient), Terminalia Ferdinandiana (Kakadu Plum) Fruit Extract (antioxidant), Lactococcus Ferment Lysate (lab-created, non-living probiotic ingredient made by fermentation of the microorganism Lactobacillus. Applied to skin, it’s been shown to have a potent soothing effect that in turn strengthens skin’s ability to defend itself from aggressors), Fructooligosaccharides (prebiotic, anti-aging), Beta Vulgaris (Beet) Root Extract (antioxidant, coloring agent), Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis Flower Extract (antioxidant/ skin restoring), Ananas Sativus (Pineapple) Fruit Extract (antioxidant, exfoliate), Carica Papaya (Papaya) Fruit Extract (antioxidant with some natural exfoliating properties), Bakuchiol (anti-aging antioxidant), Cetyl Alcohol (alcohol fatty acid, emollient), Benzyl Alcohol (alcohol fatty acid, emollient), Salicylic Acid (chemical exfoliant), Sorbic Acid (preservative), Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit Extract (emollient), Rosemarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract (antioxidant, fragrance), Xanthan Gum (natural thickener), Mangifera Indica (Mango) Fruit Extract (plant extract, skin replenishing), Eclipta Prostrata Extract (antioxidant, plant extract), Melia Azadirachta (Neem) Leaf Extract (antioxidant), Moringa Pterygosperma Oil (A non-fragrant plant oil that contains several antioxidants, including zeatin, quercetin, and vitamins A, C, and E. The oil is also a very good source of oleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid that can replenish skin and help guard against moisture loss. Moringa seed oil contains amino acids as well as plant sterols which can have a calming effect on skin. It’s one of the better plant oils for skin, and its monounsaturated fat content gives it a lighter, less greasy feel than highly saturated oils like coconut).

Overall Thoughts – It is a really nice face moisturizer. It’s a great list of natural ingredients that are good for the skin and does not contain too many fragrances (unlike the tropical melt). I don’t see anywhere it give the Bakuchiol concentration. Research has confirmed that bakuchiol works best in concentrations between 0.5-2%. Amounts lower than that have not been shown to provide retinol-like benefits (Paula’s Choice).

Conclusion

I like this brand. I would try more of the pencils and lip products. I do like the face cream but don’t necessarily love it and feel that there might be better products out there for the price. I would love to see plastic free options from this company for product decanters. That would be a winning point for me to buy more products in the future. Why don’t they have a mascara? Also, I feel like the company is kinda wishy washy. They say that they do a lot of things on their website but don’t say how. And it would be nice if they gave more detail about their product ingredients and what they are for in the description. But they are a true clean beauty company for a rather affordable price.

Have you tried any of Caley products? Do you have a favorite clean makeup or skincare company?
